7 Wedding Budget Mistakes Brides Make (And How to Avoid Them)

If you’re recently engaged and wondering how to create a wedding budget, you’re not alone.
One of the first questions I ask couples when we start planning together is:
“Have you set a wedding budget yet?”
And almost every time, I get one of two responses:
“We have a rough idea…”
or
“Honestly, we have no idea where to start.”
Despite what Instagram and Pinterest might have you believe, most couples have never planned an event like this before. You’re suddenly expected to compare supplier quotes, understand wedding pricing and somehow create a budget for a day you’ve never planned before.
Over the years, I’ve noticed the same wedding budget mistakes come up time and time again.
The good news? They’re all avoidable. Here are seven of the most common wedding budget mistakes – and how you can avoid them.
1. Falling in Love With the Wedding Before Setting the Budget
I see this all the time. A couple finds a venue they love. Then a photographer. Then the dream florist.
Before they know it, they’ve mentally planned a wedding before they’ve worked out what they’re comfortable spending. And that’s usually where the stress begins.
A wedding budget isn’t there to limit your wedding. It’s there to give you confidence and help you make decisions without second-guessing yourself.

2. Not Getting Clear on Your Wedding Priorities
One of my favourite questions to ask couples is:
“What is important to you as a couple?”
The food? The atmosphere? The entertainment?
Every couple is different.
That’s why I always encourage couples to identify what’s essential, nice-to-have and worth including.
Once you know what matters most, your budget starts working for you instead of against you.
3. Forgetting About Hidden Wedding Costs
This is the one that catches brides off guard.
Not because they’re careless.
But because nobody tells them about it.
Things like:
– Dress alterations
– Vendor meals
– GST
– Overtime fees
– Delivery charges
– Accommodation for suppliers
can quietly add thousands to your final spend if they’re not planned for early.

4. Underestimating the Impact of Your Guest List
Every guest affects more than just your catering bill.
More guests means:
– More food
– More drinks
– More furniture
– More stationery
– More flowers
A guest list that grows from 80 to 100 guests can have a much bigger impact on your wedding budget than most couples expect.
5. Spending Too Much Too Early
I understand the temptation. The candles. The flowers. The beautiful styling details.
But before investing heavily in the aesthetics, make sure you’ve secured the foundations first:
– Venue
– Photography
– Catering
– Entertainment
– Celebrant
Once those are locked in, you’ll have a much clearer picture of what you can spend elsewhere.

6. Not Tracking Payments Properly
Wedding planning involves multiple suppliers, invoices and payment dates.
Without a system, things can quickly become overwhelming.
I always recommend keeping track of:
– Deposits paid
– Final payment dates
– Outstanding balances
– Signed contracts
A little organisation now can save a lot of stress later.
7. Comparing Your Budget to Someone Else’s Wedding
This one might be my biggest piece of advice. Pinterest is wonderful for inspiration. But it can also make you feel like you’re doing everything wrong.
The truth is, the best weddings aren’t the most expensive. They’re the most intentional. The weddings that feel authentic to the couple. The weddings where money has been spent on what truly matters to them.
Not on what someone else did.
